Admissions Requirements
Each NYU School of Medicine applicant must have completed:
- NYU SOM requires at least three years of college work but recommends completion of four years of undergraduate study and a baccalaureate degree.
- Applicants must have attended an accredited college or university; courses taken outside approved colleges of liberal arts will not be credited toward admission requirements.
Normally, credit is not given for courses taken in schools of dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy.
To conform with the requirements of accrediting bodies and the Education Department of the State of New York, the following courses must be included in undergraduate study:
- English—six semester hours* (two years are recommended)
- Inorganic Chemistry—a minimum of six semester hours (including laboratory)
- Organic Chemistry—a minimum of six semester hours (including laboratory)
- General Physics—a minimum of six semester hours (including laboratory)
- General Biology or Zoology—a minimum of six semester hours (including laboratory) *A semester hour is calculated as one hour of classroom or two hours of laboratory work each week for a full semester.
The Committee on Admissions recommends that if two or more introductory courses are offered by the undergraduate science departments, the student take the more rigorous course. In the cases of inorganic and organic chemistry and general physics, it is strongly recommended that a year’s work be completed, even in colleges where the minimum requirement can be satisfied in one semester. Recommended are additional courses in the biological and quantitative sciences.
Excellence in the premedical sciences constitutes a basic requirement for selection. However, no preference is given to those with science concentrations.
